04.05.08 : HC Olten – Servette HC

After the disappointment of the home defeat to Rotweiss Wettingen the previous week the team travelled North to Olten for the first game of the National League second round. It was a hot day (22 degrees) and as soon as they arrived at the stadium the team got straight into the pre-match preparation.
Servette started the game playing a half court press. There were few chances during the opening ten minutes of the game and the hockey from both sides was quite untidy. The Servette players took time to adapt to the bumpy and dry Olten pitch. Olten were first to win a penalty corner but the shot was weak and went one meter past the post. Then there was the first controversial movement of the game when, Olten broke through the centre of the pitch to the top of the circle. The Olten player clearly obstructed a Servette defender, before untidily slotting the ball past the goal keeper.
Worst was to come when three minutes later Olten went two goals up, the whole Servette team still in disbelief of what had happened moments earlier. After the second goal the Servette midfield and defense somewhat tightened up but the play from both sides continued to be quite scrappy. There were not many flowing or passing movements in the remainder of the second half. Servette did win one penalty corner where controversy struck again as the Servette player Stuart McDade was penalized for early entry into the circle.
A more structured and focused Servette side took to the pitch in the second half. The more offensive approach of the Servette press pushed Olten deep into their own half and under a lot more pressure. The chances started to follow and Servette had a number of penalty corners in the opening ten minutes. But it wasn’t to go Servette’s way. Minutes later, defender Gordon Ramsay, was replaced with an ankle injury. With the whole Servette team pushing forwards to find a goal that would bring them back into the game a break from Olten gave them their third of the match making the scoreline 3-0.

Servette did not stop working hard and created a number of chances and a number of penalty corners. After heavily influencing words to the referee from the Olten captain Patrick Montalbetti was shown a yellow card for a strong but fair challenge sending an Olten player onto the deck. Again Servette were not discouraged and Phillipe Bernhard scored the first for Servette from a short corner flick into the bottom left corner of the goal.

In the closing ten minutes more chances began to fall to Servette there were some great opportunities for Jurka Rickli, Grégoire Conne and defender, Dimitri Gisin, but none were converted.
And then to add insult to injury (or injury to insult) Ynte Vermeulen was fowled and landed on by two Olten players leaving him with a neck injury that ruled him out for the remainder of the match.
Let’s hope that Servette can take advantage of having no games in the next two weeks and come out with something special for the next match, against Lucerne.
